Designing an Appropriate Manufacturing Architecture

Organising efficiently all the resources required for manufacturing has derived considerable attention of both researchers and practitioners over the last several decades. Beginning from a functionally focused approach several alternatives have been suggested using principles of Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing. This paper seeks to address the problems that are yet to be addressed and provides a framework for addressing these problems as organisations march into the next millennium. Based on several real life cases, three generic designs have been proposed for efficiently organising the manufacturing resources. The paper ends with a few areas that need attention from both the researchers and practitioners in the area.
